Interlibrary Loan is a service offered to patrons. When you cannot find what you want in our catalog, we can borrow materials from other libraries. We provide this Interlibrary Loan Service (ILL) for those who have a valid Pasadena library card. You will be notified ahead of time if the lending library wants to apply charges, and when you submit a request for ILL, you will be asked to provide a maximum $ amount you are willing to be charged for the item (if you do not want to pay at all, you can say $0 maximum).

The loan period for an ILL item is normally three weeks. Contact the Interlibrary Loan staff three working days before the due date if you would like us to request permission to renew the item. It may take anywhere from 2-6 weeks to receive an item, with 3 weeks being the average.
You can place your request in person at any Pasadena Public Library location, over the telephone, or online.

To place an ILL request online:

  1. Search for a title in the Pasadena Library catalog (we will not request ILL items that the Pasadena Library owns)
  2. After verifying that the item you would like is not in the Pasadena Library collection, click on "California Libraries Catalog" in the links above the search box (see image at right) or visit the California Libraries Catalog directly to search.screenshot of link highlighted in red box above search box on PPL catalog page
  3. Once you search the California Libraries Catalog, click to enter the record for the item you would like to borrow. (Note: we cannot request ILL for a new item (published recently), or for AV formats (DVDs, CDs, VHS, etc.).
  4. At the top of the item's detail record, you will see an icon of two hands for "ILL" -- click; to open the request form:
  5. Complete the form and submit
